Katy was born with a rare heart defect which nobody knew about until the week before she died. She was rather tired at the end of January 1989 and had some swelling of her ankles. When diuretics did not work our doctor referred us to the local hospital at Pembury. We arrived on the Wednesday evening and after a night of tests were referred to the specialist paediatric unit at Guys hospital in London. By this time on 2 February she had fluid round her heart which made diagnosis difficult and the doctors tried to drain the fluid. However, this did not work and what should have been a simple procedure turned into open heart surgery. Katy was very ill and was sedated and kept in ICU through Thursday and Friday whilst further tests were carried out. There was a thin membrane across one chamber of her heart which was restricting blood and oxygen flow. If nothing was done Katy would die but the operation was very dangerous. The operation was carried out on Saturday morning 4 February 1989. Katy did not survive the operation | Arthur, Katy Louisa (I19818)

Letter from Myra G Park to Stuart Park 7 May 1998: Information from Mrs Jessie Carlyle Stevenson (known as Lyle, nee AITKEN), 63 Carlyle Rd, Mosgiel, born 1918 in Carlyle Rd Mosgiel. Robert Carlyle married Jessie Stewart, no children of marriage. They lived on 3 acres of property adjoining the Stewart farm [at Silverstream, Taieri]. Robert died young (consumption TB?) and Jessie lived in a 2 room place after he died. She made ice cream and home made sweets [for sale]. In 1918 she was the midwife at Jessie Carlyle AITKEN's birth. Jessie remembers as a young girl crossing the stream to visit her, which she did quite often. Jessie looked after Mrs Carlyle when she became ill, which could have been after 1947, as she remembers she [Jessie AITKEN] had her two children then. Mrs Stevenson remembers a beautiful ring Jessie had, a wide gold band embossed which opened out to show the words 'Ever Thine'. Jessie AITKEN was named after this Jessie Carlyle, but also her father's sister was named Jessie.
Benefactor on the probate record for WIlliam Carlyle was his widow Jessie
