She was working at home as a Home Help on her father's dairy farm at Blairgowrie, Scotland when she met her future husband John Brown. John was a Trainee Supervisor.
Isabella and family went to Canada, in 1956, from Scotland.
At one time, in the 1960's, Isabelle, John and their two boys visited Isabel Aitken's parents at Windy-yett farm.

6107 It is more than likely that Agnes Aitken had an illegitimate child before Feb 1857. In the church records of 1857 CH2/503 (Torphichen) V5, it states,
"At Torphichen Manse 10th Feb 1857 compeared James Crawford" (Agnes's step-father) "craving baptism for Agnes Aitken's illegitimate child and offering to become the child's sponsor and guardian. The Session agreed to his request and the ordinance was accordingly administered."

It was here that their eldest son Robert contracted polio. Unfortunately Dave had a fall off some sacks of potatoes and broke his neck, although there was no permanent damage he was never properly well again. The potato market was not doing well and they ended up losing the farm and having to move to Levels, an area just north of Timaru where they farmed on a property known as 'Gurteen'. Nellie apparantly didn't cope well with this and eventually took her own life on 12 Feb 1942. Dave lived only a further two years and died on 23 Dec 1944."

6113 It would appear that Mary was illegitimate. On her birth certificate, sighted by her grand-daughter Aylene Gardiner, it states she was illegitimate. The informant on her birth was her father Robert Smith and Marion Aitken.

He was Private 45313, in the 7th Bn., South Staffordshire Regiment, when he was killed in action, probably at the third battle of Ypres.

According to "The Aitken's of Mosgiel": "James was born (on the 7 Sep 1856,) at East Taieri and educated at the local school. Working on his father's property he heard that land was available for settlement from the 'Knapdale run', he managed to secure section 13 of the Chatton survey district block 1. His two brothers, William and Peter, bought adjoining sections, 11 and 15. It took them three days from Kahiku to the Waikaka Valley where they found their land was covered with red tussock. He called his property Hawthorn Den. Breaking in the land immediately they sowed their first wheat crop. When harvested they carted the wheat to Tapanui where they waited whilst some of the wheat was ground into flour and taken back home. James was a very tidy farmer and a first class agricultururalist and stockman."

After Helen and James were married they travelled to Gore by train and then by dray to James's block.
James and Helen were prominent in their local Presbyterian Church, where James was the choir leader. James possessed a fine tenor voice and family and friends were encouraged to gather round the piano or tuning fork, which James preferred.
James purchased his brother William's property in 1882, when William went to farm at Longbush.
When James died his son William (Bill) took over the property.

James later knows as Poppa, became a very successful Dairy Farmer, first in Bathgate later in the Blairgowrie area of Perthshire.. During WWII, whilst farming at Bathgate he made a lot of money selling milk.
When they were at Blairgowrie his farm was considered a model farm. The Agricultural Department advisors sent young farmers to the farm to really learn how a dairy farm should be run.
