- James Aitken and his wife Margaret Pender were residing at Bathgate when he enlisted in the army, at Glencorse Army Barracks, Edinburgh, previously he had been a Territorial, in the R.A.S.C., number 325316. He was Private 45313, in the 7th Bn., South Staffordshire Regiment, when he was killed in action, probably at the third battle of Ypres.
James died on 4 Oct 1917, in Flanders, Belgium, and was buried at Tyne Cot Cemetery, Zonnebeke, Belgium
