In 1965 he wrote his autobiography from which Terry Stewart obtained the following information (via Ian Aitken Henderson).
In 1901 his father moved to Kelty, FIF. Later they moved to Canty Bay, N. Berwick.
Whilst his father was the leasee of the Canty Bay Hotel they had a small motor boat with which they ferried guests round Bass Rock. James acted as the engineer and also used the boat for fishing and hunting for which he had a great passion.
By 1914, when WWI broke out, he was 18 years old. Joining the army in Jan 1915 and was posted to the Royal Engineers. Trained at Hitchin, England and was then sent to France and Belgium repairing communications in advanced positions. Saw further action in the battle of Loos.
In 1918 he was working with a working party, near Albert, where a Scottish Rifles Regiment of the 15th Highland Division was billeted. Here he met his brother, William.
After the armistice was signed he served in Cologne, Germany, with the occupation forces, until Aug. 1919 when he was demobbed.
After two months vacation James joined the Lanarkshire Constabulary, as a Police Officer, and served in Motherwell then Whiterigg, a village near Airdrie. 9 Months later posted to Bellshill, for 7 years, as a driver for the Police Fire Brigade as well as having ordinary police duties. Whilst at Bellshill he met, his wife to be, Euphemia (Effie) Terras Page.
Euphemia was the Sister in Charge, Bellshill Maternity Hospital. It turned out that she and James had met before, they were in the same school at Kelty.
They became engaged in 1926. On 28th Mar. 1928, they were married at the Anthony Hotel, Kirkcaldy. James cousin William Burleigh was his 'best man'.
After honeymooning in Aberdeen they returned to Cambuslang for 5 years.
The next posting was as the Officer in Charge, Muirhead Police Station.
James retired from the Police Force in Sep.1948.
Prior to retiring he had purchased a house, with shop attached, in Main Street, Brightons, Falkirk. After retiring he moved in and named the house "Benarty".
Taking up employment as a Security Officer at the Regent Factory, Linlithgow until retirement at age 65.
When James retired from the Police Force Euphemia ran a shop and built up quite a good business.
