Katy was born with a rare heart defect which nobody knew about until the week before she died. She was rather tired at the end of January 1989 and had some swelling of her ankles. When diuretics did not work our doctor referred us to the local hospital at Pembury. We arrived on the Wednesday evening and after a night of tests were referred to the specialist paediatric unit at Guys hospital in London. By this time on 2 February she had fluid round her heart which made diagnosis difficult and the doctors tried to drain the fluid. However, this did not work and what should have been a simple procedure turned into open heart surgery. Katy was very ill and was sedated and kept in ICU through Thursday and Friday whilst further tests were carried out. There was a thin membrane across one chamber of her heart which was restricting blood and oxygen flow. If nothing was done Katy would die but the operation was very dangerous. The operation was carried out on Saturday morning 4 February 1989. Katy did not survive the operation
