coming to Australia in 1848, Magnus lived close to Hopetoun House, the ancestral home of the Earl of Hopetoun, Lord Linlithgow. Magnus's father was a tenant of the Earl's estate.
When Magnus first arrived in Melbourne he ran a grocery store until the time he joined the Victorian gold rush. He tried his luck at prospecting at Ballarat and later at Kyneton.

Magnus must have made money from the gold rush either through prospecting or his business skills. He started a brewery in Loddon. Later he went to Gippsland where he helped build the Shire Hall at Moe. He then founded his own building business and became a prosperous businessman. The building business was eventually taken over by Magnus's son, Robert.
Magnus met the Governor of Victoria, Lord Linlithgow the Earl of Hopetoun. The earl mentioned that he had known Magnus's father as a very honest man.

Fought with the Australian Imperial Force during WWI.
Joined the AIF at Ballarat on 15 Jul 1915. He was unmarried.
Some of the following description he disputed with the authorities on his discharge.
On the enlistment papers his name was given as AITKIN, was 22 years and 3 months, 5' 9 1/4" tall. In a letter he wrote to The OIC, Records Office, on 29 Mar 1938, when he was residing at Eulolo Station, Gilliat, N.W.Queensland, he maintains there was an error in his papers. He was 5' 11" not 5" 8" (sic).
He seems to have been a bit of a lad during his service having been on charges quite a few times.
On 10 Nov 1915 he embarked from Australia disembarking on 7 Dec 1915 in the middle east.
On the 18 Mar 1916 he transferred to the 5th Div. Artillery at Tel-el-Kebir.

It would appear that by Mar 1916 he was transferred to Southampton in England.
On 10 Jul 1916 he was tried by Field General Court Martial when on active service drunkeness Fined 1 pound.
Then on he was charged with; (1) Breaking Camp, (2) A.W.L from 17 Dec 1916 until apprehended by M.P. Bristol at 4.50 p.m. 20/12/1916.
Award 1 day F.P. No2 by Major D.R. Harris 3/1/17. Time in confinement awaiting trial 13 days. Total forfeiture 17 days pay.
Then on 3/8/1916 he was absent from parade. Award 1 days pay.
Transferred to France on 30/3/1917.
Managed to stay out of trouble until 12/4/1918 when he was charged with the crime of "taking a horse from the lines without permission". For this he was awarded 21 days field punishment.
On a Statutory Declaration James filled out on 21st Apr 1938 he resided at Eulolo Station, Gilliat, N.W.QLD.
