    • John (known as Jack) was a farmer at Golspie, NSW, when he signed up with the AIF on 3 Jan 1916, Service Number 5049. Posted to B Coy. 3rd Btn. Sent to France on the SS Makarini on 1 Apr 1916. Wounded in action on 4 May 1917. He suffered a gunshot wound to the jaw and left arm. After hospitilasion he went back to the front on 28 May 1917. Created Lance Corporal on 6 Apr 1918 and full Corporal on 1 Sep 1918
      Whilst on leave he married Maggie, (Margaret on the Army documents). Returned to Australia on board the Ormonde on 15 Nov 1919, reaching Sydney on 29 Dec. Discharged from the army on 20 Feb 1920. Awarded the British War Medal, the 1914-1915 Star and the Victory Medal.
      He was a member of the Independent Order of Oddfellows.
