  Military service during World War II and died in Italy Lance Sergeant Robert William Smeaton, serial number 40729 served with the Allied Army, in Italy, in the 6 Field Company, NZ Engineers. In November of 1943, Allied Forces tried to break through the "Gustav Line. Very heavy fighting took place at the Sangro River end of the "Gustav Line". The line was broken and Sangro River was taken at the end of November / early December. Robert was killed at the end of that battle.
