They were living at 46 Douglas Street, St Kilda, Dunedin, when Robert joined the 1st Batallion, Otago Regiment.
His batallion was part of the NZ Expeditionary Force (NZEF) involved in battles on the Somme. It was here that Sergeant Robert Lyal Aitken, No. 8/2787,was killed on 30 Sep 1916. His remains were buried at Abbeville Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France.
