Dermot Balson he writes "My mother Joan wrote 'My grandmother was courted by a neighbouring farmer, who was favoured by her parents. She, however, had her own ideas and married Henry McCann, handsome but, naturally, without any money. She only had one child, my mother (Johan). She said, mysteriously, that it was because of sitting on wet grass at a cricket match that she had no more children. My mother was christened Joan Aitken, the Aitken being after another branch of the family which had emigrated to Canada."
