  Douglas worked in insurance in Dunedin & Invercargill between 1935 and 1941. Serving overseas with the NZ Fleet Air Arm, between 1941and1945, with the rank of Lieutenant Commander. After he returned to Dunedin on 23 Oct 1945, he rejoined the insurance company, in 1946. In 1946-57 he worked in London, 1958-1962 in Sydney, 1963-1986
