- Stewart worked on his father's Farm in the Waikata Valley before enlisting in the Otago Mounted Rifles and joining the NZEF to serve in Gallipoli then Belgium. He was a L/Cpl. and had been awarded the MM before being Killed-in-Action.
Stewart worked on his father's farm in the Waikata Valley, Southland, NZ. Probably a reservist in the NZ Army as when war broke out he enlisted in the Otago Mounted Rifles. This was formed from reservist units and became part of the NZ Expeditionary Force.
Fighting in the Dardanelles in the Gallipoli campaign and in the trenches in Belgium, Stewart was awarded the Military Medal and was a lance corporal when he was killed in action in Belgium. Died 29 Apr 1918, Belgium.
There is a commemorative stone at Buttes New British Cemetery (NZ section) at Polygon Wood, Zonnebeke, W.Vlaandered, Belgium.
