  • Notes
    • After their first child was born, in Jul 1860, the family emigrated to Dunedin, on 29 Oct 1860.

An undated cutting [23 Nov 1908?] in the Serafina VANNINI / Myra CARLYLE scrapbook reads: One of the oldest residents of Mosgiel passed away on Saturday, in the person of Mr Robert Carlyle sen. He died at the advanced age of 83 years. The late Mr Carlyle was born in Linlithgowshire, Scotland, on the 18th November 1825. At the age of 35 he left for New Zealand in the ship Silestria, from Glasgow, and arrived here on 29th October 1860. He was married in 1858, and had a family of two sons and one daughter, all of whom survive him. Mrs Carlyle died on 2nd April 1891. The deceased gentleman, since his arrival in the colony has been a resident of Mosgiel, and was for many years employed at the Mosgiel Woollen Factory. His health broke down some years ago, and gradually declined until his death on Saturday. His youngest son, Peter, who is manager of the Alliance Insurance Company, Brisbane, intends shortly to visit Mosgiel, and it is to be regretted that his father's death took place before his arrival here with his wife and family. We tender our sincere sympathy to the bereaved relatives. Janet PEARSON Aitken writing to her son Thomas AITKEN 30 Ap 1872 (quoted '1866 AITKEN 1977 Some Items of Interest'): '..let Robert Carlyle know I saw his Sister yesterday and they are all well..'
