  • Notes
    • In the death records, of Torphichen Church, there is an entry on 14 Feb. 1819, "2/0 by cash from James Aitken for the children's mortcloth used to his deceased child Janet."

      In Mar 1821 James paid 6/8 for the use of the' best mortcloth' to bury his father.
      The hiring out of the 'mortcloth' was a means of the Church Minister making some money. The church usually owned three standards of 'mortcloth', which was used to cover a coffin.
      Hiring the 'best mortcloth' for his father's funeral would indicate that James had become a man of some standing.

      The monumental inscription reads;
      "James Aitken feuar here, wife Ann Arthur died 22 June 1839 aged 51, daughter Janet died 9 February 1819 aged 5, son James 25 June 1841 aged 25."

      James paid for the "best mortcloth" at the funeral of his brother Walter in Torphichen in 1822.
