  He attended school at Bullarook. On 17 Aug 1943, during WWII. he joined the RAAF where he was trained as a Fitter and Engine Mechanic. Discharged, with the rank of Leading Aircraftsman, on Feb 22, 1946 at Ransford. Awarded the War Medal 1939-1945, Australian Service Medal 1939-1945, and the General Service Badge. After being demobbed, from the RAAF, he worked as a Helicopter Ground Handler for Airfast and Esso-BHP then as Spare Parts Storeman
