• Notes

  His mother, Marion Pender, not being married at that time so Sandy was born illegitimate. His mother then left him in the care of his grandparents, James Pender and Elizabeth Pender nee Aitken, who farmed Bughtknowes, and she went to live in Edinburgh. In the 1891 Census it gives his grandparents as his parents. Whether they formally adopted him I do not know. But on his Marriage Certificate his mother is given as Marion Pender. By now Sandy was farming at "Gateshiels Farm", beside Ballencrief Nursery. It was here that their children were born. The family then moved to Gormyre Farm", Torphichen. After retirement he moved to "Arcadia Cottage, Torphichen. Alexander was the informant on the death of his daughter, Margaret in 1915
