• Notes

  On the 23 Jul 1855 Helen Lauriston confessed that she had given birth to an illegitimate child on 6th day of Dec 1854. She declared that Henry Aitken then an unmarried man and a resident in this parish had been guilty with her and was the father of the child. Henry along with various other witnesses was summoned before the Church Session at Torphichen Manse on 1 Oct 1855 the Moderator, William Branks declared "The Session having reviewed the evidence led are unanimously of opinion that the fact is established to their satisfaction that Henry Aitken has been in the bed with Helen Lauriston and that consequently he had been guilty with her of the sin of fornication. " The informant of the death of Henry Aitken was his step-father, James Crawford
