the "Register of the Privy Council", for 1686, it names James Aiken as being one of the heritors, from Torphichen parish, that was absent from the host. He and others had to explain why they were not present.
Being present at "the host" was like making yourself available for National Service in the Army. You had to present yourself, with your arms and horse, if you were of sufficient standing in the community to be able to own a horse.
It was noted who was and who was not present and a "please explain" was then issued to those that were not in attendance.
I do not know the outcome of his lack of attendance.
