Dunfermline Journal, 8 July 1876:
FATAL OCCURENCE AT HILL OF BEATH RIFLE RANGE
Yesterday evening about seven o'clock while Mr. Hugh Elder, grain merchant, High Street who is a member of the 1st Fifeshire Rifle Volunteers, was practicing shooting at the rifle range, on the west side of Hill of Beath, one of his shots struck the marker, Andrew Rumgay, and killed him on the spot.
It would appear that some little delay had occurred ere Mr. Elder fired, after the marker had removed his danger-signal, and it is supposed that the unfortunate man having observed that the flag at the other end had not been removed, so then stepped out from his place of shelter, but as he did so the shot was fired, and he received the bullet in his forehead.
No signal having been given after the shot was fired, Mr. Elder proceeded to the butts under the apprehension that something was wrong, and to his horror and dismay he found Mr. Rumgay stretched on the ground with blood issuing from the wound. Mr. Elder raised him up, but consciousness was gone, and life itself was almost extinct. Mr. Elder having shouted for assistance several men were attracted to the place, but life being entirely gone, they carried the body home to Halbeath.
In a half distracted state Mr. Elder hastened into town and gave information of the sad occurrence. On receipt of the intelligence the authorities took steps to investigate the matter.
Much sympathy is felt for Mr. Elder in the circumstances, as he is widely known and much respected and suffers deeply on account of the unfortunate event.
The deceased has been for many years marker at the butts and was exceedingly well liked by the members of the corps on account of his affability and obliging disposition. He was 54 years of age and has left a widow and grown up family."
