- After joining the 4th Scottish Rifles as a private he was posted to the 1st Scottish Rifles and sent to France/Belgium. He was wounded in action on 27 Apr 1915. After his wounding he suffered disability in his left shoulder and amnesia due to his wounds. He was declared unfit for further army service and was discharged with an exemplary record.
