  After Theresa died in 1919 he married Clara Underhill in 1924. John began trading as a blacksmith in premises at Auckland Street, North Bega. After this he became a blacksmith on Kameruka Estate for a while until his health obliged him to give up work. He was an expert tradesman and was held in high esteem as a horse trainer.
