  He was a Farmer, residing at Tokomaru East Road, Brunswick, near Wanganui, when he was killed trying to rescue his two youngest daughters. The family was on holiday at Waitotara Beach . Just before they were due to return home they decided to go for one last walk along the river wall at the mouth of the Patea river, at Ocean Beach. A freak wave swept his daughters off the wall and into the water. Peter dived in after them and managed to grab hold of one child. As he pushed her towards her mother who had also jumped into the river another wave washed them apart. The father and both children disappeared
