11671 Prior to enlisting in the Australian Imperial Forces John (Sonny) was a member of the Senior Cadets.
His first enlistment papers show he was 18 years and 2 months old on 31 Mar 1915. The papers also give his name as Joel John McLuckie Heeps, single, and residing at 30 Gourlay Street, Balaclava, VIC.
On enlistment he became Pte. 9391/ 15th Reinforcements/14th Battalion.
1916, he embarked on the "Ulysses" from Melboune to Egypt. On 3 May 1916 he marched out to Tel el Kebir, where he joined the Light Horse Field Ambulance. Tel el Kebir is 110 kms NNE of Cairo and 75 kms south of Port Said and was a large training centre for Australian reinforcements. On 22nd May he was admitted to the 15th General Hospital suffering from myocarditis, an inflammation of the muscular part of the heart. Eventually on 15 Jun he was transferred to the Hospital at Abbassia, Cairo, from where he was embarked on the "Karoola" ex Suez. The Karoola set sail for Australia on 5 Jul 1916 and arrived Melbourne on 3rd Aug. On 8th Sep 1916 John was given his medical discharge as medically unfit for duty. However he re-enlisted in the AIF, for service in Australia, This enlistment took place at Carlton, VIC, 24 days after he was supposedly "unfit for duty".
He was a Corporal when on 24 Jan 1918 he was charged with being "Improperly dressed -wearing collar- (he) buttoned up jacket when approaching." For this he was reprimanded. This was his first ever charge.
Sonny did receive another charge, 15 Jan 1919, that he stated that a form had not been received when it had been. For this he was admonished.
The records available do not give his discharge date from the AIF.
In 1923 he enquired why his invalid pension was not being sent and he was informed that the pension had been cancelled because he had not presented himself for a medical for which he had been notified of. Trouble was that the department had sent the notification, to appear, to his old address.
He was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
