    He enrolled in the Australian Imperial Forces, at Manly, QLD, Service Number QX38485. Name on his enlistment papers was Cecil James Thomson Cairncross. Always answered to the name Cec, it was only at the time of enrolling that he found out that his birth name was James not Cecil.

    George sailed to Australia, as ship's Bosun, on the maiden voyage of the "Koopa" which then spent its time cruising from Brisbane to Moreton Bay as a ferry and day tripper. (Taken over during the war as a Fairmile tender.) Whether he brought his family out on the Koopa is unknown, but sometime between 1914 and 1915 the family came to Australia.
