"Dave then decided to move his family to South Canterbury. They first settled on a farm at St Andrews where the rest of their children were born. It was here that their eldest son Robert contracted polio. Unfortunately Dave had a fall off some sacks of potatoes and broke his neck, although there was no permanent damage he was never properly well again. The potato market was not doing well and they ended up losing the farm and having to move to Levels, an area just north of Timaru where they farmed on a property known as 'Gurteen'. Nellie apparantly didn't cope well with this and eventually took her own life on 12 Feb 1942. Dave lived only a further two years and died on 23 Dec 1944."
